A Glimpse of Norway's Towns
When it comes to natural beauty, Norway seems to have hit a jackpot. Based on my experience visiting Norway, I often use the word "jewel" to describe this attractive country. Sometimes a pristine pearl, sometimes a multi-dimensional diamond. From stunning fjords to pretty waterfalls to Arctic ice fields and tundra, the natural beauty to experience here is endless. Seasonally, there is the possibility of chasing the Northern Lights, enjoying hours of daylight during the midnight sun, and everything in between. Unsurprisingly, Norway often ranks among the top 10 on many a list of the most beautiful countries in the world.
Norway also consistently lands in the top ranks of the annual World Happiness Report, along with its Scandinavian counterparts. While in Norway, you can't help but notice the positivity that pervades. Top this off with its Viking heritage, historical landmarks, and energetic cultural scene. There is so much to discover in Norway, from its intriguing cities and towns to charming fishing villages.
Whether you are coming to experience the culture or to spend time outdoors taking in the gorgeous beauty, inevitably, you will be spending some time in Norway's cities and towns along the way. Here's just a glimpse of a few favorites -
OSLO
As the capital city of Norway, Oslo is the most visited city in the country. However, unlike most capital cities, Oslo has a unique balance of natural beauty and modern innovations. The city sits at the Oslofjord to one side with panoramic mountain views on the other. While in Oslo, sites such as the Norwegian Folk Museum, Viking Ship Museum, or the 13th century Akershus Fortress give a glimpse into the country's past. The Munch Museum, dedicated to the life and art of Edvard Munch, is expected to open in the fall of 2021 and is a much-anticipated addition to the art scene here. Of course, you can't miss a walk "on" the Oslo Opera House or a taste of the food, from creatively prepared modern cuisine to traditional waffles to handcrafted cider.
BERGEN
As the second-largest city in Norway, Bergen has a lot to offer. Often known as the heart of the fjords, Bergen is a quintessential Norwegian town with old wooden boathouses that date back to the 12th century. The old wharf is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and delights visitors with its old cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. No visit to Bergen is complete without sampling the local seafood! In fact, Bergen has also been recognized by UNESCO for its gastronomy.
TRONDHEIM
Perfectly positioned in the middle of Norway's coastline is the town of Trondheim. As the country's third-largest city and former capital, Trondheim features a vibrant cafe culture in the colorful old quarter. As you walk the city's street, you'll be surrounded by plenty of Norwegian history and culture. See the 18th-century wooden wharves along the river or bike like the locals. The Nidaros Cathedral is the northernmost Gothic cathedral in the world, and if you are up for the 170+ steps, you will get to take in the view of the city when you get to the top.
Henningsvær
Located on the Lofoten Islands is the charming fishing village of Henningsvær. Located just inside the Arctic Circle, the town is known for its brightly painted houses that rise out of the sea and stand out against the harsh elements. Throughout the year, the town can experience beautifully clear days with 24-hours of sunlight or be completely blanketed in fresh snow. One of the best ways to experience Henningsvær is by water around the islands.
Tromsø
Despite its remote location deep within the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of Norway's most beautiful cities. Not only is it known for being a place where you just may be able to catch the Northern Lights (seasonally), but you can also enjoy dog sledding, spot reindeer, and explore centuries-old houses in this arctic winter wonderland. Here you can also experience the Sami culture and traditions.
And more
We have only scratched the surface of the towns you can experience in Norway as you explore this beautiful country. Along the coast and within the mainland, town after town awaits exploration, each with it’s own character and vibe. No matter where and how you choose to travel in Norway, you'll be treated to breathtaking natural beauty, stunning architecture, and a friendly culture that will hopefully leave you as “happy” as the locals.
