From Rainforests to Icebergs, Wildlife Journeys for the Explorer in You
Whether trekking for gorillas in the rainforest at Volcanoes National Park or witnessing giraffes roaming in the Serengeti, for many, a quintessential African safari is at the top of the list of “must do” travel experiences. The natural habitats and ecosystems of the African continent are so varied, from stunning coastlines to arid deserts to serene mountains to open savannas to native forests, making each experience unique.
While an African safari is a trip like no other, there are other awe-inspiring wildlife experiences that are distinct to their own corners of the world. These include opportunities such as seeing endemic wildlife not found elsewhere on the planet, accessing bio-diverse areas with naturalist guides alongside and seeking sightings of rare and endangered species.
Here are just a few wildlife experiences to consider:
The Amazon Basin
An immersive journey into the Amazon is a journey into one of the most important regions on earth. The largest rainforest in the world is also the world’s most bio-diverse, with millions of native plant and animal species. The incredible array of flora and fauna found here is just astounding. Animals such as capybaras, anteaters, jaguars, howler monkeys, sloths, pink river dolphins, macaws and many others make their home here. 60% of the Amazon Basin is in Brazil with the remainder in South American countries including Peru and Ecuador. To explore this region in depth, either base yourself at a remote ecolodge or on a small river cruise ship. In either case, take excursions with naturalists who will help you understand the vital role this ecosystem plays on our planet while spotting the incredible animal and plant life.
Manitoba, Canada
While polar bears can be found in several northern regions, Churchill, Manitoba, often referred to as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” is said to have the most concentrated population of these majestic white bears. In this area, polar bears can be viewed from innovative vehicles which keep you protected while you are accompanied by naturalist guides. And, the intrepid and adventurous amongst us may choose to venture out on an expert led trek by foot on the tundra. Whichever method you choose, your reward is the possibility of standing by as you watch the bears interact with one another and exhibit their natural behaviors. Sightings are prevalent during the annual migration that the bears take to the Hudson Bay to feed before the winter, but you can also visit in the summer when beluga whale pods congregate in the bay. Caribou, moose, seals and wolves are amongst the other wildlife here.
Svalbard, Norway
It wouldn’t be fair to mention polar bears without mentioning the Arctic. Venturing to the spectacular surrounds of the North Pole to the Svalbard archipelago will not only give you access to the chance of seeing polar bears but also the prospect of encountering walrus, whales, reindeer and a multitude of seabirds. The best way to explore this region, including the far-reaching island of Spitsbergen, the largest in the archipelago and one of the prime wildlife viewing areas, is by an expedition cruise. Explore breathtaking landscapes of majestic glaciers, deep fjords, icebergs, blue waters and arctic tundra with your expedition leaders, who guide you on your Arctic adventure.
India
The excitement of spotting a rarely seen endangered tiger may be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a wildlife focused journey in India. The search for the elusive Bengal tiger may be the draw, but India also offers the opportunity to encounter other native wildlife including leopards, rhinos, sloth bears, wild buffalo, elephants, birds and monkeys, some of which are also as elusive. While national parks such as Ranthambore are very well known, some of the prime spots for wildlife viewing are lesser known. Given the complexity of traveling within India, experienced guides and drivers to accompany you on your journey and an expertly planned program are an absolute must for your Indian wildlife experience.
The Galapagos Islands
The inspiration behind Darwin’s theories of evolution, this isolated group of islands is a pristine “living museum” full of intriguing creatures and stark landscapes. Giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas and fur seals are amongst the diverse stars of these islands. We, as curious humans, are just here to watch the show in wonder while they go about their natural existence. Many of the species you encounter here can’t be found anywhere else. Did you know that this is the only place in the northern hemisphere where you can find a penguin - the Galapagos penguin? The islands are truly like no place else on the planet. Discovering them firsthand will certainly leave an indelible mark on you.
